SERVICES AND STAFF
AT THE PRACTICE
Practice
Staff -
Overview
There are more than 50 full-time or part-time members of staff employed at the practice. These include a business manager, a practice manager, two assistant practice managers, two prescribing practitioners for the Brough and South Cave Surgeries, a finance assistant, two clerical assistants, four medical secretaries, 14 receptionists and four practice nurses, one community nurse, four health care assistants and six dispensers. Our reception staff will assist you with general enquiries and booking of appointments etc.
Nurse Practitioners
Nurse practitioners are highly trained and experienced nurses who hold a number of advanced nursing qualifications in health care. They can assess, diagnose and treat a wide range of minor ailments (eg tonsillitis, chest infections, cystitis and eye infections). They are able to assess and give urgent treatment for chronic respiratory conditions and give health care advice. They can prescribe when appropriate and will refer patients to another member of the health care team if needed (eg doctor, practice nurse, dietician etc).

Practice Nurses
The practice nurses assist the doctors with patient care. They are on duty in the treatment room during normal surgery hours (Monday - Friday 8.30am - 12 noon and 4.00 - 6.00pm). Their duties include giving injections, removal of sutures, cervical smears, ear syringing, annual contraceptive and coil checks, advice on preventing heart disease and general health check-ups etc. When booking an appointment with the practice nurse you will be asked what treatment you are attending for. This is to help the nurse prepare for your appointment before you arrive.

District Nurses
District nurses work with the practice
and are based at the Brough Primary Care Contact Centre (formerly the Brough
Resource Centre), Welton Road, Brough, HU15 1BH. The team can be contacted on
01482 335007 or via reception on 01482 335015. To send a fax please dial 01482
335014.
Health Care Assistants
Our health care assistants assist
our practice nurses and are available every morning and some evenings. Their
duties include taking blood samples and blood pressure readings, ECGs etc.
Midwives
If you are pregnant, the midwife
will be asked to contact you so that she may assist with your care. She arranges
antenatal appointments, relaxation classes and visits you after your baby is
born.
If you need a midwife urgently,
please telephone the Women's & Children's Hospital on 01482 382742.
Health Visitors
Health visitors work with the practice
and, like the district nurses, are based at the Brough Primary Care Contact Centre. They
can be contacted on 01482 335010. They are available to advise you and your family
in all matters relating to your health.
School Nurse
The school nurse specialises in
promotion of health to children, young people and their families. She can give
advice, guidance and support to parents on many topics including bedwetting and
behaviour management as well as arranging sight and hearing tests. She can be
contacted on Tel: 01482 335008.
Doctors In Training
The Brough surgery forms part of
the Hull Vocational Training Scheme for General Practice. This is a three-year
training scheme for fully qualified doctors (GP Registrars) intending to specialise
in general practice. One year is spent working with GPs and two years are spent
in hospital in various specialities particularly relevant to general practice.
During their time with us, the registrars fulfil all normal duties. At times,
their consultations with patients are video taped for training purposes, with
your prior consent. Your co-operation in seeing them occasionally, rather than
your usual doctor, is appreciated.
In addition to hosting GP Registrars,
we also host GP Returners. GP Returners are fully qualified GPs who are returning
to general practice after a break. From time to time the practice also provides
work experience for medical students and student nurses, as well as training
for our own clinical staff. You will be kept fully informed, and your consent
will be sought, if your care will be observed or given by someone who is in training.
The Hull York Medical School (HYMS)
was established three years ago, coming second only to the Imperial College
London in the 2005 Guardian University ranking.
The university now enters the next
phase of training the doctors of tomorrow. The practice is pleased to be involved
in the development of the student doctors. They are required to put into practice
the knowledge they have learnt so far in the clinical setting. The student doctors
need to learn how to take a history, examine and formulate a patient management
plan.
The practice would appreciate your
support and involvement in the training process by volunteering to attend the
teaching sessions. One session will involve all four student doctors and their
tutor taking part in specially organised clinics and the other sessions will
have two students sitting in during the surgery observing the tutor. You will
be asked for your consent as required.
In particular the tutors are part
of a team which includes consultants in cardiology, respiratory medicine and
dermatology. Hence we are interested in recruiting patients with problems, as
stated below, but we are happy to hear from anyone interested in taking part:
Patients who have suffered from
heart problems, eg history of angina, myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism,
musculoskeletal chest pains, blood pressure problems or heart failure.
Patients with asthma, emphysema,
a history of pneumonia or pneumothorax.
Patients with skin conditions such
as eczema, psoriasis and benign moles.
The practice would like to thank
you, in advance, for your participation and help.
